Luís Alfonso Villalobos

The work of Luis Alfonso Villalobos is based on painting as a support, but exceeds the medium’s attributes to think about it in both conceptual and material terms, extending it to the production of collage, sculpture, and installation. In addition to the compositions that combine figures, contexts and color fields in two-dimensional formats, Villalobos is interested in the material uses of painting, recognizing them as objects in themselves.

Understanding painting as “a machine to live in”, his work presents references to Modernist architecture, scenarios where natural elements take their place in civilization, as well as revisions of art history, including notes on the readymade, comics, and design. In this way, his work involves the conceptualization of architectural manners –models and planes– materialized though pictorial language and elements.
